Brian Young

Art, for me, is a constant challenge as I attempt to interpret the diverse Tasmanian landscape using a combination of hard and soft pastels.  My work is of a semi-abstract nature, each painting begun en plain air to consolidate the overall composition.  Then, back in the studio, I work on colour and tone - both important aspects of my work.
My aim is not so much to reproduce nature but, perhaps, to improve on it in a visually expressive way with composition and colour combinations.
I largely favour the square format, using spray fixative only during the process, avoiding its use on the finished work as it tends to dull the colour.
