Russell Joyce
My drawings are inspired by the landscape of Mount Nelson, a place I know well through walking and observing it closely. I focus on the details that make this bushland unique—rocks, lichen, gum leaves, and the dense layers of trees. Through careful, repetitive mark-making, I try to show the textures and patterns that often go unnoticed. My work is not an exact copy of the landscape but a personal response to its calm, complexity, and constant change. I hope viewers slow down, look closely, and feel a deeper connection to the natural environment I draw. My work responds to the bush that we interact with primarily at a surface value, that strip of bush on the roadside, at the side of the car park lookout or a neglected area in suburbia. My drawings are made on the computer, using a set line. My aim is to produce a large scale exploration of landscape with a set gestural line. Usually I resolve the drawing, printing on paper with a wide format printer, this year I am experimenting with laser engraving.
